When people think of Costa Rica, they often imagine rainforests, volcanoes, and pristine beaches. However, hidden in the heart of Guanacaste lies one of the country's most extraordinary ecosystems: the Cipancí National Wildlife Refuge.
Located along the lower basin of the majestic Tempisque River, this protected area safeguards one of the largest tropical dry forest wetlands in Costa Rica. More than a destination, Cipancí is a living laboratory where rivers, wetlands, forests, and wildlife coexist in remarkable ecological balance.
Every journey through its waters offers an opportunity to witness nature as it has existed for thousands of years.
A refuge of international ecological importance
Established in 2001 and managed by Costa Rica's National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), the Cipancí National Wildlife Refuge forms part of the Lower Tempisque Basin conservation network, alongside internationally recognized protected areas such as Palo Verde National Park, Lomas Barbudal Biological Reserve, Barra Honda National Park, Mata Redonda Wildlife Refuge, and Corral de Piedra Wetland. This network plays a vital role in conserving wetlands, tropical dry forests, migratory bird habitats, and the ecological processes that sustain the Tempisque River basin.
Its strategic location makes the refuge one of the most important natural corridors in northwestern Costa Rica, connecting aquatic ecosystems with one of the most endangered tropical dry forests on Earth.
An incredible diversity of wildlife
The ecological richness of Cipancí allows an extraordinary variety of animal species to thrive throughout the year.
American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus)
One of the refuge's most iconic inhabitants is the American crocodile.
The Tempisque River provides ideal nesting and feeding habitat for these impressive reptiles, some exceeding four meters in length. Despite their formidable appearance, crocodiles are essential predators that help regulate aquatic ecosystems by maintaining healthy fish populations and removing weak or diseased animals.
Observing these prehistoric reptiles in their natural environment is one of the highlights of every expedition.
